Al Jazeera America to close down

Unsustainable business model cited in decision to close as global network announces a new digital drive in US market

Al Jazeera America will shutter its cable TV and digital operations by April 30 of this year, the company announced Wednesday. The decision by the AJAM board was “driven by the fact that our business model is simply not sustainable in light of the economic challenges in the U.S. media marketplace,” said AJAM CEO Al Anstey.
“I know the closure of AJAM will be a massive disappointment for everyone here who has worked tirelessly for our long-term future,” Anstey wrote in an email addressed to all the company’s employees. The decision was no reflection on the work of that staff, he said. “Our commitment to great journalism is unrivaled. We have increasingly set ourselves apart from all the rest. And you are the most talented team any organization could wish for.”
The announcement of AJAM’s closure coincides with a decision by its global parent company to commit to a significant expansion of its worldwide digital operations into the U.S. market.
“As audiences increasingly turn to multiple platforms, including mobile devices, for news and information, this expansion will allow U.S. and non-U.S. consumers alike to access the network’s journalism and content wherever and whenever they want,” the Al Jazeera Media Network said in a statement. “By expanding its digital content and distribution services to now include the U.S., the network will be better positioned to innovate and compete in an overwhelmingly digital world to serve today’s 24-hour digitally focused audience.”
Anstey praised the Al Jazeera America staff as “a brilliant team made up of the most committed, professional and dedicated people … In the months to come, we will do everything that we can to support you, to work with you and to ensure you are shown the respect you deserve.”
Despite its initial struggle for TV ratings, the newcomer network was quickly and repeatedly recognized by its industry peers for the excellence of its journalism. Within months of launching, AJAM began collecting prestigious prizes — from Peabody, Emmy, Gracie, Eppy and DuPont awards to a Shorty Award, for best Twitter newsfeed, and Newswomen’s Club of New York’s Front Page awards and citations from groups such as the National Association of Black Journalists and the Native American Journalism.
Anstey said AJAM made slow but steady progress in recent months in growing its audience. “Our editorial excellence was demonstrated time and time again on the major stories of recent months,” he wrote. “And we continue to win praise from our colleagues in the industry and from our viewers for the quality of our output.
He vowed that AJAM would maintain its standards of excellence until it goes dark.
“Between now and April, we will continue to show America why AJAM has won respect and the fierce loyalty of so many of our viewers,” Anstey wrote. “Through your remarkable work at AJAM, we have shown that there is a different way of reporting news and providing information. The foundation of this is integrity, great journalism, impartiality and a commitment to the highest quality story telling. This will be our lasting impact, and as we produce and showcase the best of our work in the weeks to come, this will be clear for everyone to see.”

Terribly disappointed...I have almost exclusively watched Al Jazeera for news and information.  There is nothing on American television that remotely competes.

There goes the only news channel in the US providing in depth coverage of real news.   Back to the old channels providing Hollywood , the Kardashians,  sports scandals, and sound bites as a substitute for coverage on important national and international issues.  It shows how little America, especially corporate America, cares about good news coverage.

Wouldn't you know---the only decent news  programming in the US, but it couldn't compete with the news programs featuring Hollywood, football  scandals, the Kardashians, and other junk program American TV calls ''news''.    Sound bites seem to win over in depth programming of national events, and the coverage of world events by American TV is poor at best.  PBS/NPR try, but even they can't match Al Jazeera's programming.  Tells you something about the American psyche, I suppose.

I'm SO disappointed by this news!  I've been a media rep in LA for the past 20 years  I know how the biz works and why decisions are made. But -- on a personal level -- AJAM has become a real friend and trusted/respected go-to for international and national news.  It's done an amazing job of becoming a neighbor/spectator -- one that I deeply enjoy engaging with every night.  You'll be INCREDIBLY missed! Congratulations to the entire AJAM team on the excellent job you've done!

AJAM is by far the best source for news. It is not caught in the echo chamber of the biased American News. AJAM is not beholding to a particular political base. Without fail they beat the other news organizations to breaking news events. AJAM interviews were unedited and allowed the interviewed person to talk about issues at their own pace. You know what I mean. Interviewers for other news organizations lead the interview to an "I got you moment"; for the purpose of showing how clever the interviewer is. AJAM reported the inconvenient truth and the special interests be damned.

Please don't go! Hang in there. Only AJAM and PBS provide consistent, rational, unbiased, professional journalism in America. You are leaving us to wallow in the petty, sensational, fear-mongering, celebrity loving, news-ertainment swill coughed up by audience chasing corporate media outlets. Try changing your name in America to "Island News" or "Peninsula News". Americans can't tell the difference between AL Jazeera, Al Queda, or Al Bagdadi. They all sound the same to most Americans. Please stick it out and stay true to your profession.  Thank You!

Really too bad, I had looked forward to this network coming to the US and have been watching it ever since. #SOTU coverage was the best this year hands down while every other network took partisan sides or spun the event their way. I will stream overseas coverage though.

It is sad to see Al Jazeera give up on America. Why don't they switch to Al Jazeera English  which is designed for the English speaking world and Europe.

I'm old enough to remember that when the 3 US networks did not require the news departments to "make a profit". 1950-1970, my father was VP ABC TV here in Los Angeles. This was a time when the goal of the news departments was to provide accurate news through television journalism. It was their responsibility to accurately inform the public. It wasn't about money.

BBC news still available. All US English TV Networks are owned by liberal Jews including Fox News which ignores Trump but Trump is covered extensively by CNN and MSNBC.

It's a Jewish conspiracy! Rupert Murdoch and his FOX CEO Roger Ailes are Jewish liberals??????

Sad to see you go. I really enjoyed your news/Reporters and your special segments that you have. Now I'm gonna be stuck with news that does not really go around the world!  The globe is getting smaller and its a need to know... what's going on over on the other side. Good luck to you all.

Please reconsider your decision to shut down your U.S. operations.  This country really does need the quality and unbiased journalism you have provided over the past few years.   It's apparent from watching the commercials in between programming that you have not been able to attract the advertising clients needed to support the cost of operations (if I see one more commercial about Dr. whatever his name is advertising his miracle wrinkle cream or Amish Wood Milk I thing I'm going to scream), but please hang in there and you will eventually get better advertising clients as more and more Americans learn about your quality of journalism.  I tell everybody about how good the quality of your reporting is.  Don't underestimate the impact of providing Americans the opportunity to hear the truth about what is going on in this country and the world - it is far greater than you realize.  The U.S. has an overwhelming influence on the rest of the world - how Americans views are shaped about what is really going on will determine the role the United States plays in determining its future.

So I guess this says that factual news and real investigative reporting can't make a sustainable profit in the United States? Truly a sad bellwether for our society.

I used to watch AJ all day when it was online.  Then they switched to sat/cable only and turned their streaming off.  I have no cable or sat at my home.  Does this mean I will be able to watch it again?

AJAM, I would say that I enjoyed your insightful viewpoints, videos, excellent photos and stories "from the field". The quality of work was excellent. I did not, however, appreciate what I suspected as attempts by AJAM to influence and inflame viewer's/reader's passions to boost profits (no news=no $$$). Seeing AJAM rehash the Michael Brown story (on this site) and even changing headlines six weeks later to make it appear to be another "unarmed black teen killed by white cop" , and me reading half-way through the article to read that it was a teen named Michael Brown! And when it came out that everybody was lying about that poor officer, I would expect you to capitalize on that, but nobody wants to read about the truth...only what sells. That, I believe is AJAM's failure; giving the appearance of having an agenda. To me, your legitimacy came into question after reading the same/sometimes rewritten so as to appear new, racially charged articles day after day for six months...long after the proverbial horse had been flogged to death. Thanks for a lot of good stuff, other than that, though.

Hopefully Al Jazeera in English will be picked up by the Dish TV and Direct TV plus some cable companies!  I shall really miss it on the Dish Network!!

We can still get our world news from  Al Jazeera English ...Sadly most Americans can only read or speak their one language and need English language to cope with the world.

What a disappointment!  I'm shocked! This is very sad. You're the only hope for future generations to have real world news and views on domestic and international issues. I had so much hope that our future generations aren't going to be locked in non-sense news coverage that is censored and influenced by corporate and government entities.
You're the only news channel that provides TV viewers with true unbiased news and balanced coverage.
Please reconsider your decision. My entire family loves watching your programs, including my children. They love TechKnow and find it very interesting. This is a sad sad day for America! It's truly is!

This is so disappointing.  We need a source of non idiotic news in the US. What can be done to not let this happen?
